5 Tips to Boost Your Child's Immune Function

Kids are constantly picking up bugs because they don’t worry about germs like grown-ups, so they tend to touch more surfaces such as the playground, soil or even pets more often than adults. This makes them efficient little germ carriers. Children collect, transfer and carry more germs and bacteria than adults, and at a faster rate.  Their little immune systems aren’t as developed as adults, so when you combine this with playtime it increases their chance of getting sick more often.  Help protect your child by following these 5 easy steps.

1.Get your child adjusted.  Most people think chiropractic care is just for back pain however adjustments can help the body function better.  Getting your child adjusted regularly can help boost their immune system.  A strong immune system helps to protect us from illness and helps the body fight any immune invader, bacteria or viruses, that may come along.

2.Drink more water.  Most of us do not drink enough water kids including.  Soda and juice contain a lot of sugar.  Sugar is known to suppress the body’s immune system.  An overdose of sugar, eating or drinking 100 grams (8 tbsp.) of sugar, the equivalent of two- and-a-half 12-ounce cans of soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40 percent. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five hours. Help support your child by offering more water, veggies and fruits to help provide the body the best nutrients for optimal health.

3.Regularly take a Multivitamin supplement.  Dr. Katrina’s favorite choices are from whole food sources.  The body does best when it recognizes the nutrition that it is receiving, a whole food source provides the body with concentrated nutrition from foods.  Our office loves Standard Process Supplements. 

4.Take Probiotics.  Probiotics help provide the body with good bacteria.  The resident probiotic bacteria fight any harmful germs that may enter the intestines.

5.Vitamin D is an essential vitamin to increase immune function during healing.  Vitamin D is a great supplement to take year round, however, in times of acute illness you may increase your child’s dosage to support immune function.
